Green light for youth officer

26/06/2008 12:28:00 PM
Cooma-Monaro Shire Council has given the green light on providing a council-funded youth officer after councillors voted in principal to create the position at its draft management plan meeting on Monday evening.

At least $20,000 will be taken from reserve funds to create the nine-month contract, and general manager John Vucic will look for extra funds as part of an organisation wide review.

"I'm very happy council has recognised that assisting the youth in this area was necessary even though it is not our core business," Mr Vucic said.

"We have serious youth issues here and need to be more proactive in addressing these issues, especially when the State won't intervene," he said.

YMCA youth project manager Hayley Redhead has welcomed the decision to have a second council-funded youth worker in Cooma.

"I hope that this new position will develop a youth committee for young people to have a voice, and allow me to focus on my core role, which is working with youth at risk and marginalised youth," Mrs Redhead said.

"It is fantastic that the council is showing support for the youth of Cooma, especially as it will help during drop in hours at the Hub," she said.

Councillors Vin Good and Katrin Hackney supported creating the role at the meeting on Monday, saying council had a responsibility to cater for the needs of Cooma youth, and the role was necessary to assist Mrs Redhead with her workload.

Councillor Winston Phillips, however questioned if filling the youth officer position was one of council's core roles, and added that funding the job would be another cost-shifting measure from the State Government.

While at the meeting the councillors also agreed to support a staff decision to charge one water connection fee rather than charge separate amounts for residential and non-residential properties.

With only four submissions from the community and an empty gallery on Monday night, Cooma-Monaro Shire Council's 2008/09 Management Plan was passed with little resistance.
