AFTER much delay and speculation the Cooma Swim Centre refurbishment will finally go ahead after the State Government announced funding for the project last week.
Member for Monaro Steve Whan and Minister for Sport and Recreation Graham West announced a $220,000 grant for the relocation of the current pool amenity block to the Crisp Street side, when they visited Cooma on Friday.
"The project will include upgrades to toilets, change rooms and club room facilities, allowing more convenient access and a better level of comfort for pool users," Mr West said.
However, the refurbishment has only been made possible due to a combination of funding from all three tears of government - $300,000-$400,000 from Cooma-Monaro Shire Council, and a further $525,000 from the Federal Labour Government.
Cooma-Monaro Shire mayor Roger Norton has welcomed the State funding, saying if all goes well the community would see the new amenities block completed by late 2010.
"Now we can get the drawings finalised and have them go out to tender, so hopefully works will start by March 2009, and will be completed before the start of the next season," Cr Norton said.
"We are thrilled, it is terrific that the three levels of government and the community has been able to work together to achieve this great result," he said.
While at the Cooma Swim Centre, Mr Whan announced a $100,000 grant for upgrades to Berridale Swimming Pool, $100,000 for the redevelopment of Bombala Swimming Pool, and $70,000 to the NSW Snow Sports Freestyle Association for the construction of a water ramp at the Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre.
"Work on these two facilities will make a substantial contribution to ensuring healthy and active communities in these areas," Mr Whan said.
